Frequently Asked Questions
General Rack Questions
We can build racks out of pretty much any wood that can be cut and drilled. Redwood is standard because of ability to withstand humid cellar environments, cost and ease of cutting. Cherry, Western Cedar, Mesquite, Poplar are examples of wood that can be used. If cost is not an issue we can work with Teak, and other exotic woods. We can stain wood if needed, but do not recommend stain for smaller sealed cellars.
The spacers between the wood rails can be made of a variety of metals or plastics. Metal spacers are normally powder coated clear or black, but can be done in custom colors or even made of aluminum, stainless steel or copper. Plastic spacers can be round or square and black or clear.
Actually our racks are probably the easiest racks to assemble. The racks can be assembled in place, or assembled and moved into place. The racks use guide rails to hold the ladders in place. 4 nuts are used to hold ladders to the rails. Shelving requires 4 screws per shelf. Tools needed are a screwdriver, wrench and drill for wall anchor holes.
Actually, we do have cross supports every two feet. These supports are straps made of clear Lexan, and with bottles in place are pretty much not seen. The supports snap in and do not require tools for assembly. We can make straps out of powder coated metal for those using metal spacers and wanting to keep to "old world" materials.
Rather than dedicated entire columns to large format bottles, our wine racking uses a Multi-Format™ Shelf system. Shelf inserts in the racking system can hold 1/2 bottle, 750ml bottles, magnums, large formats, cardboard cases, wood cases and support 12 bottle bins. These shelves can be adjusted and moved as needs change.
Our racks can optionally be ordered with a feature we call California-Tilt™. This option raises the wood rails in the rack slightly in the front. In the event of an earthquake or shaking the bottles will naturally want to slide towards the back of the rack and (hopefully) the still attached wall.
Of course we can't guarantee your bottles. and our racks will survive any kind of earthquake, but the California- Tilt™ will add one more measure of safety.
This option is no extra cost for our Diamond and Retail racking.
Questions About Three Elements Design
We have been in business for almost two years. We mainly have consulted and built customer specific metal and wood racks. Our new racking has been in development during this period.
We are targeting wine cellar installers, builders and architects with our Diamond and Carbon series. Our retail wine racking is targeted at wine stores and restaurants. We will sell directly to end users at retail pricing, but do not offer design services.
